The only good thing is it really looks like karma is finally hitting the CCP, and we’ll have to see how they survive the next recession.

I’ve had many Chinese, Taiwanese and Russian friends over the years. I’ve noticed they are very similar to us in the West, in that, yes they think much is bad about their Govts, but at the same time, there is much that is good. Also, people there are as unlikely to revolt as people here, doing all the draconian Covid measures. Society in general just wants to leave things as they are.

Some good things they point out: 1) Stability in the regime. When the world is in chaos, this is very important to ppl, even at expense of freedom 2) Many of the Western poisons such as moral degeneracy, political correctness, death of tradition etc have not taken root there. People of the world are generally disgusted by extremists in the West, as much as we are by the evils of CCP

TLDR; things are as unlikely to change there, as are in our own corrupt countries.

My intuition is that the CCP may fail for the same reason the cccp failed. Overpowerful dictators start to think they’re all powerful, and it becomes too easy to engage in first order thinking, dragging everyone down with them.

I can’t speak to the Russians… Say what you will about Putin, but america almost elected someone to be president whose claim to fame is she boned another sitting president. And how long was FDR in power in the US?

Problem is CCP is a different beast from CCCP. Fluid rather than blunt and ideological

They focused on stability, NO MATTER WHAT. Using CCCP tactics, as well as ‘Confucian’ style or Western tactics, whatever works

Yes Gulags, re education, censorship and military take overs. But also allowing regional Govts to be overthrown when they outlive their usefulness aka ‘Mandate of Heaven’, a fusebox for social unrest. They make regions compete against each other, set up market experiments with special zones, made private industry an arm of the State, weaponized the private industries in the West against them

CCCP never considered any kind of privatisation, let alone one under ‘socialism’ and as a tool of political war

Chinese, innovated ‘socialism’ in a completely new way, just as they do in every sphere

5 years ago when they weren’t breaking their own toys for no apparent reason I would have agreed with you, but many of the problems are starting to come to light. They’re barely managing flooding. They’ve poisoned so much of their water supply that they can barely grow food in many arable locations. They’ve relied so much on building ghost cities that they’re on the verge of a financial collapse whereupon they’re using tanks to protect banks. They’ve got their eyes set on an insane “covid zero” policy that has them committing suicide.

We also must remember that a core concept to them is face, they care more about looking good than being good. A form of pride that impresses many but will lead to a fall in and of itself.

Water problems have been a forever issue. They could implement ways to fix the wastage in terrace farms instead of building ginormous canals to get more fresh water. But politics w farmers wasting cheap water is more important to Govt than a problem that can be kicked down the road

Ghost cities was a problem even 15 years ago. Govt kept kicking the can down the road, and now the bill cometh. You sense a pattern here, right ?

Covid policy genuinely has me puzzled. Sorry, I discussed this before w others on this side, and so far we don’t have a plausible answer. It maybe had better support w populace than doing nothing. IDK. One day more data, aftermath and opinions may comes to light. Right now it seems like they made a mistake.

Yeah, I’m somewhat conservative and risk averse in that I don’t like kicking problems down the road, and when I see someone doing that I start to see those problems as the next things that will explode hugely. It’s been a reasonably successful method so far.

Covid policy has me thinking about face. I’m thinking that at the beginning like everyone they locked down and they locked down harder than anyone else because they could because they are China, but now that it turns out that lockdowns aren’t the best policy, they can’t just say “oops, my bad we were wrong”, they have to keep pushing to make it seem like they were right all along. I look at western leaders like Trudeau the same.

Its possible. State media and CCP are so opaque, it takes forever to really understand why the wheels turn a certain way

I extremely highly recommend Yukon Huang, who goes against all mainstream views in West regarding China, but his explanations fit the puzzle much much better. I think the man’s a genius: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XepCi0I_g6I

What’s scary is not that this is happening in China, but that Western countries are trying to copy it, Covid camps, tracking, curfews/lockdowns, restriction of speech

Madness
