Seeing as how people would follow a wolfballs community from another instance and then just downvote all the post I don’t see the value in counting foreigner votes. This isn’t California or New York we don’t accept illegals voting. They have to apply to become legal citizens (aka make a local account).
As you can see from the table below, all the downvotes seem to be coming from elsewhere,
lemmy=# select person.name, post_like.score, person.local from post_like left join person on person.id = post_like.person_id where post_like.post_id = 5314 name | score | local --------------------+-------+------- masterofballs | 1 | t Scruffy_Nerfherder | 1 | t dessalines | -1 | f lunatichacker | -1 | f masterofballs | 1 | f squashkin | 1 | t wigglehard | 1 | t Monarque | 1 | t seahorse | -1 | f
Votes on other instances will still be counted while viewing it from their instance. I’ve tested this this morning.
If two instances were tightly coupled perhaps it would make sense to keep them but Votes don’t really add much to the conversation except as a form of protest to the information. I think I only care about local user’s negative opinions. People who are invested emotionally in wolfballs.
