LOL. Piracy is a venial sin, so go to mass. Watching porn is a mortal sin, so there isn’t much to pirate…

No. The word has been ‘redefined’ like many things. It used to mean stealing someone’s belongings. To steal is a sin.

Modern piracy is copying 0s and 1s, not stealing physical goods. The argument it is ‘lost revenue’, thus stealing, is wrong.

Let me explain:

If I judge something worthy, I buy it after pirating. Most stuff isn’t worth it, so its money saved. Like not going to a movie after reading bad reviews

Good work creates fans, who willingly give $ for support and buy more from the creator. Its similar to patronage of artists.

Software piracy is the power of customers to try and decide before buying.

What do good creators do ?

  • Create quality goods, so more fans will give $

  • Offer technical support or more features like early access (beta)

Its a net +ve for the world. Not a sin.

I talked to my Priest about this. What he was saying is that traditionally intellectual property was viewed as something that was mostly owned by all. (rough paraphrase)

Honestly, historically speaking there was no way to really steal I.P. until recently. They had to shift definitions around once $$ got attached to it. I think is exact words were, ‘at most it is a venial sin.’

I mostly pirate things I have owned or paid to see because I know what is in them when watching with the family. So they already have my money.

Example: Microsoft tried to stop piracy of Windows in the 90s, but they stopped. Windows became a household name, people bought Apps for it, Office, games etc. If they stopped pirates, many would have gotten a competitor like Linux installed. That would not bring them additional money anyway. Plus their dominance means they can get licensing fees from developers and spend less on Marketing. Its more profitable to work with pirates.

Now they let pirated versions of Windows update themselves to legal ones, offer free licenses and software

Same with Napster leading to creation of platforms like Spotify and Youtube

Another angle: Marketing. Nowadays market is flooded with options. A good product is a loss for the creator if no one knows it exists.

Piracy or free versions are a way to generate publicity. More people try, more will buy. A small developer can compete with industry Titans. Fair competition and fair for customers.

Piracy should be called ‘Patronage’.

Post anything, all are welcome. No one can kick your post here. Do what you like. @WiggleHard bans nothing and exiles nobody (Dont doxx wolfballs users, no posting of porn/nudes or foot fetish material unless it involves political scandals, no ads for sex sites or dating sites; do that on your own time, no solicitation for pyramid scams, no posting job advertisements unless from official job sites, no posts supporting pedophilia, not all love is love) also: (we cannot allow violations of the patriot act concerning how we speak, no calls for violence, suggesting you are personally harming someone ect. These things are not free speech protected by law but actually against the law and could get the website shut down.) (no spam posting, especially spam posting of what could be considered symbols of hate) examples: guy posting nazi flag 5 times in one day, guy posting “whitey is the devil over and over, im going to use my best judgement on this one rule)
